It must be noted that none of ESTHER'S children went by the name BROCK OR HOWARD and I don't know how to connect the name. I do know in 1850 when ISAIAH was an infant he was registered in the census as ISAIAH BROCK I never suspected a middle name .
New information below.
NEW IN 2006 I am told by another family finder, not a researcher that James C. Howard is Isaiah's father and BROCK was ISAIAH'S middle name so more than likely Esther was single at the time so later gave all her children her maiden name which was WILSON this may solve the mystery of the HOWARD connection we'll have to wait and see. JAMES HOWARD'S GRANDPARENTS NAME WAS BROCK SO THAT WAS HIS MOTHER'S MAIDEN NAME. And his uncle's middle name was BROCK
JAMES went on to be a Lieutenant in the civil war. He was killed by a runaway team IN 1868 on TANYARD HILL while trying to excape being shot by a man named Johnson. The Wilson family legend is that Isaiah's father was killed by a runaway team of mules on Tanyard hill so this could be true for all the older people in the last generation say "our name was supposed to be Howard" but I have no solid proof so take it for what it's worth. But I believe this to be true.

Lt Howard married another woman. She later married David Earnest her

Esther Wilson's father was Isaiah Wilson b abt 1806 although he said Kentucky most likely he was born in North Carolina arriving prior to 1824 when he witnessed the signing of a deed and he was not in Harlan county in 1820
This puzzle starts with Esther Wilson as a young girl having an encounter with a man named SAYLOR. the result of this was CALLOWAY WILSON b1845 and ( this part is speculation only) the closest SAYLOR family to Isaiah Wilson in the 1840 census is ZACHARIA SAYLOR and Sarah HELTON their oldest son CALVIN was close to ESTHERS age. SARAH HELTON is the daughter of old SHADRACK HELTON..IF in fact CALVIN was the father of CALLOWAY (and this is only an assumption) this would make CALLOWAY SHADRACK'S GREAT GRANDSON which would explain the fact that Calloway lived most of his life with Shadrack.
Legend has Shadrack as the father of Calloway but this seems unlikely as Calloway was told his father's name was Saylor early in life..
Esther was listed as Esther Brock and son ISAIAH BROCK in the 1850 census Living with the widow of John Helton's second wife Barbara, she was Shadrack's stepmother, Others in the household included Elisha Helton b 1829 who married Hetty Osborne in 1854 in Harlan County, Nancy Roark b 1838 who married John Collins in 1856, Esther used the Brock name until resuming her maiden name Wilson.. I cannot find a marriage to a BROCK the only connection to BROCK is the wife of SHADRACK her maiden name was BROCK
Esther had two son's Family legend say's by James Howard who was killed by a team of runaway mules at Tanyard Hill in Bell County, Isaiah and Alexander and one dtr Elizabeth they used the name WILSON after becoming adults....at this time I cannot verify any marriage to James Howard or even a connection to him except through family legend however there are a great number of Howards and also Hensley's in the Osborne family line back a number of years so the possibility is there, also Jerimiah Wilson said in a letter that his Grand father's name was James Howard and his grandmothers name was Esther Wilson...I cant even suspect who the father of Alexander and Elizabeth is unless it is of course JAMES HOWARD.
This is new as of 2001 JAMES HOWARD son of John Covey Howard, Married to Mary C. Howard,daughter of Larkin Howard missing in the 1850 census but are in Harlan in 1860 and 1870 His family's legend is that he was killed by a runaway team also. Calloway lived with his great grand father? Shadrack and Shadrack's wife Mary in 1850 and Calloway's mother Esther lived two houses away with her son Isaiah and the widow Barbara Helton, Shadrack's step mother (could her maiden name have been BROCK?). (it was) John, Shadrack's father had passed away , in the 1860 census Calloway used the name Saylor and in the civil war he used the name Helton but for most of his life he used the name WILSON, he married Elizabeth Blanton in 1867.
IN 1860 Esther and her children Isaiah, Elizabeth and Alexander were Living in Harlan County under the surname BROCK and in a separate household Calloway was still Living with Shad.
Esther later married David Earnest and had a child named Annie Earnest in 1864, David was killed in the civil war in 1865... So in Harlan 1870 Esther and her children Isaiah, Elizabeth, Alexander and Annie now had the surname EARNEST, in 1880 both Isaiah and Alexander were married using the name WILSON. as did Calloway..
Arena Helton Hensley, Isaiah's second wife was the daughter of Elijah Helton who was the son of Shadrack,,, Arena was Isaiah,s half Neice..

Family legend has Isaiah, Alexander and Elizabeth being fathered by a JAMES HOWARD and that is first hand information supplied by his son Jerimiah, he said in a letter in my possession that his grandfathers name was "Jim Howard". I have found no other connection to Jim Howard.

noted that when he was born his name was listed in the census as ISAIAH
BROCK and thats what I have to go by....I dont know for sure where the
Brock name came from I need more help on this. I never suspected he may

The marker on Isiah's grave say's he was born in 1845 however in the 1850 census he was only 9 months old this would suggest the grave marker is wrong, he would have been born in 1849 according to the census taker..however he had a half brother born in 1845,, also his name is spelled ISIAH on the stone...
When he was young he spelled his name Isaiah and he sometimes spelled his name Isariah. but the name on his stone is Isiah so thats what I have used here.
ISIAH married HANNA at MARY OSBORN'S mothers house{ her name was {MARTHA OSBORN} in HARLAN or as it was known at that time MT PLESANT. Feb 1 1875

Arena had fifteen children and brought to the marriage 6 step children age 25 down to age 5 that were liveing with them. It should be of interest that ARENA HELTON HENSLEY Was Isiah's Half brother's daughter which made her his half Neice.
Isiah later married LUCINDA SCOTT,at his death she entered into a lawsuit with ISIAH'S children contesting the ownership of the family farm, The judge ruled against her and divided the farm among his children awarding them each a portion .SHE WAS EXCLUDED.
He and some of his family are buried in the WILSON family cem. HAGEN VA. LEE COUNTY - from 25E Middlesburo, KY. take 58 east just after passing thru the tunnel,, this takes you towards Jonesville right turn across a small bridge on 664 to I think it's 667 I'm not sure of the number but I will check it, left to cemetery the old Wilson family farm is the beautiful little valley in front of you.. Isaiah gave the land for the cemetery and was the first to be buried there..There is an easier way in but I dont know it at this time.
Isiah I'm told had a long black beard down to his belt line I wish I could provide a photo but alas there is none in existence that I know of.....

Howard was an over the road truck driver and retired as such he then opened a bar in Covington Ky. where he died by his own hand in 1984...The story sounds simple but Howard never married he preferred instead to take care of his mother till her passing. When this happened he retired from trucking and bought the bar in Covington where he lived in an apartment above. Howard was a very nice person who always seemed to be very lonely unless he was with family....

Her first husband and father of her three son's Roy Estes dropped out of sight and was last seen by his family at the funeral of his mother Annie in 1943 leaving a wife and three boy's to fend for themselves.
Delores married Lindsey Smith in 1944 they were married 20 years when she passed away in 1964 afterwards he moved around a lot finally settling in his old hometown of Jasper Ala. He passed away in 1984...
